A collection of loose albumen prints. These topographical views cover Hong Kong, the Chinese Treaty ports (a good selection of material from Shanghai) and Japan. Many of the Japanese prints are hand-coloured. It appears in the Supplement to the Library Catalogue published in 1901.
This material probably came from different sources and was collected together in the Library.

[Panoramic view of] Hong Kong [c 1900]. 1064 x 215 mm. A panoramic view, composed of 4 joined prints, looking down from the Peak onto the city of Victoria, the harbour and the Kowloon Peninsula. At the extreme right of the picture are Causeway Bay and Kellet Island. The centre of the city can be seen in the second portion from the right: at the junction of Wardley Street and Chater Road is the canopy of the Queen Victoria Jubilee statue, with Queen's Buildings on the left and the Hong Kong Club on the right. On the third side of the square is the City Hall, with St John's Cathedral behind that and the three tiers of the Murray Barracks to the right. Government House is at the bottom left of this section. In the bottom right of the third section are the Public Gardens, with the clock tower at the junction of Queen's Road and Peddar Street above them. In the centre of this section is the gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral, with the Victoria Gaol beyond. The fifth section of the panorama is largely taken up by a spur of the peak. The building second from the left is the Hong Kong Hotel (its three top stories added at some time in the 1890s). To the right, on the other side of Peddar Street are the former premises of Jardine, Matheson & Co. (demolished in 1907). The next building but one houses the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Co., with the offices of Lane, Crawford & Co. next to it. The following building is unidentified and then comes the Marine Club and Charmichael and Co. Further along the waterfront is the Victoria Hotel and at the extreme right the Central Market. |

The British section of Shanghai was in the centre or west district to the north of the native city. It was bounded on the south by the French Concession and on the north by the Soochow Creek, beyond which was the American Concession. The section of the Bund seen here stretches from the Customs House (the twin-gabled building with central clocktower at the extreme left of the print) northwards nearly to the Public Gardens. |

A red brick building, with details in 'Tudor' style, the Customs House consists of a central block with a square clock tower rising above the main entrance, flanked by two projecting wings terminating with gables. Although various railway schemes had been proposed from as far back as the 1860s, it was not until the end of 1895 that the Imperial authorities agreed to the building of a line between Shanghai and Soochow. The twelve miles from Shanghai to Woosung was opened for traffic in 1898. Poor condition, some fading and tears at edge.. |

The Cathedral, Shanghai [1890s]. 281 x 218 mm. View looking towards the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity from the corner of Kiangse and Hankow Roads (the edge of the building seen at the left is part of the Municipal Council Offices). The view shows the east end of the Cathedral. The Cathedral, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, was erected with some modifications to his original plan (the chancel, for example, was shortened) in 1866-69. The spire, however, was not completed until 1892. |

The town of Amoy is situated on the south west corner of Amoy Island, with Kulangsu Island in the bay facing the town.
