Bernard L. Drake was a member of the Malayan Civil Service between 1955 and 1961, one of the last three to be recruited through the Colonial Office, who opted to stay in Malaysia for four years after independence in 1957. In his final position as Principal Assistant Secretary, Prime Minister's Department in Charge of Ceremonial and Public Functions, he worked closely with the late Stephen Kemp, Deputy Permanent Secretary and later Secretary-General of the Royal Commonwealth Society.

The photographs are all individually annotated on the back in pencil, often identifying individuals shown and have reference numbers in ink. All measure 12 x 9.2 cm, either in portrait or landscape format.
