274 x 228 mm. View looking along the eastern wall of the citadel towards the Mosque of Mohammed Ali. The Citadel is situated in the SE corner of Cairo and was begun by Saladin in 1176. The Gamia Mohammed Ali or Alabaster Mosque was begun by Mohammed Ali on the site of a palace blown up in 1824. It was completed in the form seen here by Saibl Pasha in 1857. The architect was a Greek Yasuf Boshna; this possibly accounts for the undeciphered word in the caption. The caption on the print is hard to read. Photograph by Zangaki. |
