Alexandrie [i.e. Alexandria] - Colone de Pompie [Colonne de Pompée]. 223 x 283 mm. General view of Pompey's Column, situated to the S of the Arab Cemetery. The column, built of red granite, is 88 feet high including the pedestal and Corinthian capital, and was possibly erected by the Emperor Theodosius to commemorate the destruction of the Serapeum in 391 AD. The Citadel is situated in the SE corner of Cairo and was begun by Saladin in 1176. The Gamia Mohammed Ali or Alabaster Mosque was begun by Mohammed Ali on the site of a palace blown up in 1824. It was completed in the form seen here by Saibl Pasha in 1857. The architect was a Greek Yasuf Boshna; this possibly accounts for the undeciphered word in the caption. Grand Poay [Han Pire] (Burmese Dance). 255 x 199 mm. Showing a group of Burmese women dancers, with musicians at the right and spectators in the background. This photograph is reproduced in The Queen's Empire (1899) page 219 above the title 'A yein peve in Burma'. It is there stated that the photograph was taken in the course of a performance before Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, 'on the occasions of a visit paid by him to the Swah Dagan Pagoda during the course of his voyage round the world in company with his royal brother Prince George'. This must refer to the voyage of the Bacchante in 1879-82, but Burma was not visited during the trip. The Pagoda of Good Deeds [Mandalay]. Surrounded by 999 [sic] smaller temples, each containing a seal engraved with a religious law. 275 x 212 mm. View from Mandalay Hill looking down onto the Kathodaw or 450 Pagodas; this consists of a central temple surrounded by 450 smaller, white buildings set in a square of about ½ mile square. This complex was erected by King Thibaw's father who, anxious to preserve the holy books of Buddhism, caused the tenets to be inscribed on 450 stones above which a small domed building was erected. Dyak Chief and family, Borneo. 266 x 207 mm. An elaborately posed group in front of their house. The photographer has been at pains to introduce into the picture as many artefacts and utensils as possible. Roth identifies the following components of the photograph:. A slabit for carrying back loads; behind it the frame on which the women stretch their yarn for tying in the patterns by the process of saving, and afterwards brushing on the dye. Thin drum, with fish trap (ensenga) behind it; further to the right, a rice basket, and in the background a heap of palm leaf for atap. Mother seated on woven cloth. Father seated on map. Belle, in festive attire; head dress of beads threaded on brass wire (?) brass aigrettes, small pieces of coloured cloth; whole dress hidden by festoons of beads. Girls seated on woven cloth; corset ornamented with sheet brass; armlets of large shells. Hat hidden by shield. Water gourds. Dulang - wooden trough for catching rain water (?). Scupper for excavating post holes. Atap apong - palm leaf roof. Atap Papan - shingle roof.
