200 x 139 mm. Showing Thibaw (d. 1916), the last King of Burma 1878-85, and his wife and half-sister Supyalat, seated on cushions. Parts of the photograph have been retouched and the background painted out. After the surrender of the Burmese to British forces in November 1885, Thibaw and Supyalat were sent into exile in India where Thibaw remained until his death. Supyalat was later allowed to return to Burma and died in Rangoon some years later. Thibaw employed a court photographer during his reign and a number of portraits and negatives were found by the British in the palace and marked by various photographers.
Unlike the majority of images in this collection, there is no photographer's name on the reverse of the print. However, the original typescript catalogue credits J. Jackson.
