Rafts are built of the plentiful bamboo of the area, ten to twelve huts of dani leaves, better known as atap are erected on the rafts and these are filled with paddy. Built on the site of the village of Toklaing during the Chin disturbances of 1889, the fort became one of the headquarters for British military activity in the Chin Hills. In its early days its defensive position was not strong:. 'The fort was in reality no fort at all, but consisted of houses, scattered on the side of a hill and surrounded by an abattis of kaing-brush and sticks, whilst at various points of vantage block-houses were built for the guards. The Chins, who are catlike in their movements, soon learnt that their power to annoy us lay in their skill in creeping into the fort between the sentries, and night after night the cattle-pens inside the piquets and abattis were found to have been visited and cattle stolen. On one occasion the whole herd of 70 head was carried off, but was recovered. Another time a drabi was shot and decapitated in the middle of the fort ...' (Carey and Tuck 1896, vol. 1, p.32).
