Alan Gardner-Waterman (1882-1953) was born in Ashford in April 1882, and educated at Uppingham, 1896-1899, and R.M.A. Woolwich. In 1900 he received a commission in the Royal Field Artillery. He served in India as subaltern and captain, and in France in the First World War, during which he was wounded twice. He volunteered to return to India for the Afghan War, and remained there until 1925, being promoted to Major and Lieutenant-Colonel. He retired in 1933.
A collection of albums of diaries of Alan Gardner-Waterman containing, in all, 237 photographs, 2 watercolour sketches and 19 maps. The diaries record hunting trips with Mrs. Gardner-Waterman to Kashmir; the entries are mostly brief, but are supported by meticulous maps and many photographs, mostly of a high standard. Most were probably taken by Col. Gardner-Waterman or by Mrs. Gardner-Waterman though there are some exceptions. The captions given are those under the photographs, with some dates for adjoining diary headings; in a number of cases these are related to positions marked on the maps by letters, and fuller information can normally be found from the diary itself. The diaries are stored at RCMS 79.
Presented by Mrs E.M. Gardner-Waterman in 1975.
