The Black Hole, Calcutta. 234 x 286 mm. View showing an Indian sitting in front of the stone pavement which locates the site of the Black Hole of Calcutta. Beyond this, above an arched gateway is a plaque reading: 'The stone pavement close to this / marks the position and size of the / prison cell in Old Fort William known in / history as the "Black Hole" of Calcutta'. This memorial stands in a courtyard of the Calcutta General Post Office and was erected in 1884 after researches by Roskell Baines of the East Indian Railway led him to believe that this was the correct site. Subsequently research removed the location by only a few feet and in 1901 Lord Curzon caused a polished black marble pavement, fenced off by iron railings, to be placed at the spot, with a lengthier inscription on the Post Office wall above (see Y3022AA/26). He also had the brick and stucco gateway, which obscured the site from the street outside, taken down and replaced by an open iron gate and railings (for a fuller account see Lord Curzon of Kedlestoffi, 'British Government in India' (2 vols, London, 1925) vol I. pp. 150-155). Photograph probably taken soon after the plaque was erected, since the new plaster work is clearly visible. Creator: Bourne and Shepherd. Fairish condition, some fading along top and bottom edges.. |
