Content and context

An album of photographs, 250 x 210 mm, of the Jumna (Yamuna) Canal System in northwestern India. On the inside front cover is a label inscribed 'Happy Christmas 1915. Hearty greetings and good wishes to Mrs. F.M. Purves from L. Jwala Prasad, SDO'. The album was, from an inserted note, apparently donated to the Commonwealth Institute by Ereth Marshall-Purves, the son of Ronald Frederick Purves (d.1906), who was presumably connected in some way to work on the Jumna Canal System.

Some of the photographs are dated 1907 or 1908, and they are glossy black and white or sepia-toned prints, most measuring approximately 250 x 150, with four measuring approximately 250 x 75 mm. The captions are taken from those printed under each photograph.

Presented by the Commonwealth Institute in 1990.
