Miss Dora Chadwick, O.B.E., Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal, was matron of the Government General Hospital for Women and Children, Madras, from 1928 until 1941, when she was promoted to Principal Matron with the Government of Madras, the first such appointment to be made. She was President of the Trained Nurses Association of India.
Collection of loose photographs measuring 205 x 155 mm. The photographs were not captioned, but some details have been supplied by Miss Hartley, and others obtained from the Nursing Journal of India (NJI). 32 are copies of a collection (probably taken by official photographers) owned by Miss Dora Chadwick, who appears in many of them. Two versions of a TS obituary of Miss Chadwick by Diana Hartley, published in the NJI are filed with these photographs, as are copies of extracts from NJI relating to the subjects of the photographs.
The originals were handed to Miss Hartley by Miss Chadwick's niece and lent to the Imperial War Museum, which copied them and prepared two sets of prints, one of which it retained, and the other is listed in the catalogue. Numbers in brackets are those given by the imperial War Museum.
Presented by Miss Diana Hartley in 1972.
