Worthington Jukes (1849-1937) was born in Canada, and educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton, and Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1872; M.A. 1874). He was ordained deacon in 1872, and priest in 1874, and served as a C.M.S. Missionary at Amritsar, 1872-1873, and Peshawar, 1873-1890, until his wife's ill health compelled his retirement from the Society. He became Rector of Shobrooke, Devon, in 1890, where he remained until 1925. Jukes died at Exmouth on 10 March 1937.
Typescript autobiography by the Reverend Worthington Jukes illustrated with photographs, mostly stuck in but a few loose. The spine is lettered 'Afghan Reminscences' but the title page reads 'Reminiscences of Missionary Work in Amritsar 1872-1873 and on the Afghan Frontier in Peshawar 1873-1890'. This volume was written in the months following his retirement and typed by Jukes himself. It is a top copy, illustrated with photographs, postcards, maps and other items, and although there is a carbon copy in the Church Missionary Society, this is clearly the author's master copy.
The illustrations include postcards and a number taken by Jukes himself. The information in the captions is taken chiefly from the text of the volume, though some additional biographical notes are included. The volume is stored at RCMS 90.
Jukes bequeathed his autobiography to his wife, Catherine Scott Jukes, in 1936. The collection was purchased from Wells Bookshop, 1954.
