1 Lord Hardinge's statue & the Ochterlony Monument, Calcutta. 296 x 233 mm. View looking SW across the Maidan, with the equestrian statue of Viscount Henry Hardinge of Lahore in the foreground. Hardinge (1785-1856) was Governor General of India 1844-48. The statue is by John Henry Foley (1818-1874); as well as Hardinge's statue, erected in 1858 and considered his finest work (see Rupert Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851), Foley was also responsible for those of Lord Canning and Sir James Outram in Calcutta, and the figures of Asia and Prince Albert on the Albert Memorial. Beyond Hardinge's statue is the 165 foot tower erected in 1828 in memory of Sir David Ochterlony (1758-1825), conqueror of Nepal in 1814-16. The monument, designed by J.P. Parker, is in a mixture of architectural styles: on a stylobate and pedestal described as 'Egyptian', a Greek Doric column rises to the bulbous Islamic cupola. Beyond the monument a section of Chowringhee Road can be seen. Bourne no. 1698.

15 Government House, Barrackpore. 296 x 233 mm. View looking across the Mottee Jheel ornamental lake towards the N facade of Government House, Barrackpore. The building is in the form of a single high storey and attic resting on a rusticated arcade above which projects an octastyle Tuscan portico. This finely composed photograph fulfils all the conditions laid down by Bourne for a picturesque. arrangement: five Indian figures are grouped in the foreground while the building itself, with the requisite stretch of water, is framed by the over hanging branch of a tree. The cantonment of Barrackpore is situated on the banks of the Hughli some 15 miles north of Calcutta and became the summer residence of Governor Generals and Viceroys. Lord We11es1ey took over the existing commander's bungalow in 1810 and appointed Charles Wyatt to make changes and repairs. This building was however pulled down in 1804 to make way for a more substantial residence to be designed by Thomas Anbury, but this building in turn had not proceeded far at the time of We11es1ey's recall in 1805 (see Y3022AA/1). The building seen here (again, probably to the designs of Thomas Anbury who was at this period Superintendent of Buildings at. Barrackpore) was completed around 1815 in the Governor Generalship of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, Earl of Moira. A detailed history of the house and its occupants can be found in Curzon, vol. 11, pp. 3046, where this photograph is reproduced. Bourne 1746.

As well as the banian grove which, formerly enclosed by shrubs, had been opened out by Lady Canning, the grounds at Barrackpore also contained a temple of fame, a menagerie and a gothic ruin (see following plate).
