1 Aerial view of Valetta. 204 x 157 mm. A view looking towards Rnella Bay and Fort Ricasoli, south of Grand Harbour. The buildings dominating the foreground of the photograph are those of the Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi. The following caption is found on the reverse of the print:. 'British official photograph: Crown copyright reserved, issued for British Information Services by Photographs Division, Central Office of Information, London. Commonwealth Prints Library. Subject: Mediterranean: Malta, G. C. Picture Number: R. 13168. Picture Shows: An aerial view of Valeta, capital of Malta. Information: Malta became independent in September 1964. With the neighbouring island Gozo it had been under the protection of Britain since 1802, and was awarded the George Cross by King George VI in recognition of its valour during the long siege of the island in the second world war. Total population is some 328,50. March, 1965'.
