|
S.L. Cassar established a photographic business in Malta circa 1890. In 1915 Cassar was the only photographer in Malta undertaking cinematographic work. At this time his studio was at 31 Strada San Giovani, Valletta.
A collection of loose photographs measuring approximately 285 x 240 mm. The majority of the images are of Valletta. All the prints are captioned.
Presented by L.G. Forné on 29 January 1912.

Bird's eye view of the Gzira. 284 x 241 mm. A finely detailed view looking east from Gzira towards Maramuxett Harbour. In the foreground the characteristic terraces of small fields enclosed by dry-stone walls slope down towards the sea front, with Manoel Island in the centre of the photograph, part of Sliema at the left and Valletta and Fort St. Elmo at the right. The old fort and modern military barracks can be seen on Manoel Island which is joined to the mainland by a man-made causeway. Battleships are moored in Sliema Creek to the north of Manoel Island. Good condition, apart from slight fading in from edges.. |

The harbour itself is crowded with British warships dressed with flags. The occasion of this celebration is not known. Good condition, apart from slight yellowing.. |

Strada Reale. 282 x 241 mm. A view looking along the Strada Reale (Kingsway) from the Floriana end towards Fort St. Elmo, with pedestrians and pony-traps in the street. The street is decorated with flags for an unidentified celebration. The entrance to the Opera House is on the right hand side of the street. Good condition.. |

Public Library. 291 x 244 mm. A view of Queen's Square from Kingsway. In the centre of the square is the statue of Queen Victoria erected for the jubilee of 1897, behind which stands the fine classical building of the Library first used as such from 1811. At the left of the print is the side wall of the Governor's Palace which leads down to a market (not in use in this photograph) in the street beside the library. Good condition.. |

Opera House. 290 x 234 mm. Showing the junction of Ordnance Street and Kingsway (Strada Reale) with the ornate Opera House on the corner and 'karrozzin' (horse-drawn cabs) parked in the roadway. Built between 1861 and 1866, the building was largely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. Good condition, apart from slight yellowing at edges.. |
