Content and context

Francis Henry Young was born in 1865. A lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, he later served in Egypt, Hong Kong, Malta and India. Young retired as a major in 1907.

A number of the images depict Gibraltar, the remainder relate to Young's service in Woolwich, Shoeburyness, and elsewhere in the U.K.

Purchased for 25s. in 1955.

A view showing army officers posed in front of a massive gun which is mounted on a railway sidecar. Figures identified beneath the print are: Sergeant -Major Cooper, General Biddulph (General Sir Robert Biddulph, 1835-1913), Governor of Gibraltar 1893-1900, but at this time Director-General of Military Education), Lt. Engl [rest of word obcured by tear] and Colonel Nicholson.

70 'Original 101 ton gun - 1887'. 277 x 191 mm. A view showing this huge gun, mounted on Railway Proof Carriage either No. 10 or 11, with a Manning Wardle steam locomotive behind it on the line. Of the various men standing in front of the gun only Francis Henry Young and Captain Francis Edward Acland, Assistant Superintendent of Experiments 1884-1888, are identified. The original caption has been amended in pencil to read 111 tons.
