1 [Cairn in Udi Division, Onitsha Province]. View of the pyramid-shaped cairn built to commemorate the opening of the first road built by voluntary labour in Udi Division. A typewritten caption (which is a duplicate of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'Cairn erected to commemorate the opening of the first road built by voluntary effort in Udi Division. It was built a few months before the opening of the Mass Literacy campaign which gave such a stimulus to Mass Education. It was because the people showed, by making this road (and another one at Affa), that they had the capacity for voluntary service that the D.O. launched a full scale Mass Education campaign. 12000 man-days of labour were given and the road was completed within 2 months. N.B. The cairn is in the form of a pyramid of the type that is built locally to honour tutelary fetishes.

2 Mbabu Ozou Owa. A typewritten caption (which is a duplicate of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'Bridge erected by voluntary labour. Timber and cement given by N.A. [Native Administration] River formerly crossed by walking on a tree trunk. The road - about 9 miles long - was made by voluntary labour to Mbabu Owa where, in 12 months, the people erected - a temporary village hall, a stone-built sub-dispensary, a Maternity Home and preparations were made to build a Reading Room and a Co-op Shop'.

4 Udi Village. Showing a youth writing on a blackboard with the date 21/8/45. A typewritten caption (which duplicates most of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'During the war literacy pupils sent letters to their soldier relatives abroad. Those who could copy but not compose a letter used to copy as an exercise a letter giving the Udi Village news'. The annotation continues 'Thus each batch of letters would contain about 40 that were all the same but as each went to a different soldier that did not matter'.

5 Udi Village. Mass Literacy class. Showing a row of women at a table in the open air receiving instruction. A typewritten caption (which duplicates most of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'This is the 'top' class for women - normally 12. These are wives of miners at Enugu and of N.A. [Native Administration] employees'. The annotation continues 'Note these women are well dressed'.

7 Umana village. Co-operative Shop. A single storey stone building with corrugated-iron roof. The printed caption on the reverse reads 'Note - shop boy's quarters at back'. A pencilled annotation on the reverse reads 'Umana Village. Co-op shop. This was originally a copy of Ojwoka shop (see 8) but was built 4 feet longer than the Ojwoka one. Then Obwofia built theirs (see 17) with shop-boys quarters attached. So as an afterthought Umana added shop boy's quarters at back - easily distinguishable in photograph'.

8 Ngwo Uno village. Showing the village hall under construction. The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'The most ambitious building project undertaken by any village was that at Ngwo Uno where the people undertook to build a large village hall. It could not be completed owing to the lack of roofing materials, so a room in one corner was roofed and used as a Sub-Dispensary'. The pencilled annotation differs slightly and has the additional phrase 'in Udi Division' appearing after the words 'by any village' in the first sentence.

Ogwofia consists of a number of quarters scattered about ¼ to ½ mile from each other. This piece of land is the most central point. Foreground. Sub-dispensary. (cement and timer [sic] provided by N.A.[Native Administration], mudblocks and labour provided free by village. Middle distance. Bricks for erection of the village maternity home. Background. Reading room'. The pencilled annotation is almost identical to the caption.

A typewritten caption (which duplicates most of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'They are for propaganda purposes to persuade individuals to use bore-hole latrines with washable cement seats'. The annotation differs only in the addition of the word 'portable' after the word 'cement'.

The pencilled annotation on the reverse reads 'Shed erected by village to house hand worker machinery used to process fallen fruit. Other building [sic] left to right are:- Sub-dispensary Co-op shop Village Hall (practically invisible behind machionery shed)'.

24 Nkanu Lepers' Village. General view looking along tree-shaded path towards buildings. The typewritten caption (which is a duplicate of a pencilled annotation) on the reverse reads 'Built by voluntary labour. Clan gave 2 square miles of land. 3 compounds built, each for 40 lepers, 1 for women and 2 for men. Village filled to capacity in 12 months and plan being made for extension. Lepers are self-supporting, but pay entrance fee of 30/. [?shillings] which is paid back at rate of 5/. per month to enable them to buy food until their farms are producing. Photo shows a path leading to one of the men's compounds'.

96 The main figure of the seven holy bronzes of Tada, Nigeria. The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'It is of dark bronze, 3 ft 8 inches high, and is called 'Gago'. Gago is a title still used by the village chiefs in Idah, below Tada on the Niger. The head-dress of the figure consists of a tigh [sic] fitting helmet. The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'They were discovered in a clearing amidst a grove of oil palms and other trees, the clearing itself bordered by peregun trees, a kind of aloes planted round holy places. The grove is today an important centre of the fertility cult. Natives of Esie found the figures about 1773.
