Content and context

230 x 293 mm. Half length seated portrait, in uniform, of Field Marshal Sir John Simmons. Simmons entered the Royal Engineers in 1837. His later appointments included; Secretary, Railway Department of the Board of Trade 1851-54, Commissioner with the Ottoman Army 1854-56, Consul General, Warsaw 1857-60, Commandant of Royal Engineers, Aldershot 1860-65, Director of the School of Military Engineering, Chatham 1865-68, Governor of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich 1870-75, Inspector General of Fortifications 1875-80, Governor of Malta 1884-88. This is a modern print, but probably taken from the original negative. Photographer unknown.
