153 x 184 mm. Photographic copy of a supposed three quarter length portrait of Wolfe against a background of ships of the line. Wolfe served in the Army from 1742 and after much active campaigning commanded the force which captured Quebec from the French in 1759, he himself dying in the hour of victory. The portrait is accompanied by a letter of 2 October 1925 from W. Morgan which apparently relates to enquiries to authenticate the picture: 'I am enclosing you a photograph of my portrait of 'Wolfe' which I should be glad if you would accept. The size of it is the same as the portrait in our own National Portrait Gallery but I like mine best as the seascape background with the three decker line of battleships is so attractive. I have taken your advice, and am in communication with the high Commissioner for Canada'. Photographer unknown. |
