148 x 195 mm. Three quarter length portrait of Major General Orde Charles Wingate in bush uniform, probably taken in Burma. Wingate entered the Royal Artillery in 1923; he was attached to the Sudan Defence Force 1928-33 and served in Palestine and Trans-Jordan 1936-39. He was active behind enemy lines in Ethiopia in 1940-41 and was then selected to take charge of units to operate behind enemy lines in Burma. For this task he was promoted Temporary Brigadier General with the title of Commander of Special Force, India Command in 1943. He died in an unexplained aeroplane crash in the Naga Hills of Northern Assam. Imperial War Museum photograph. |
