54 x 89 mm. Three quarter length portrait of William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872), Australian explorer, author, barrister and statesman, copied from an older original. Wentworth was educated in England and returned to Australia in 1810. Three years later, in 1813, he carried out an important piece of exploration in the crossing of the Blue mountains and in 1824 was admitted to the Sydney Bar. In the same year he became a co-founder of The Australian newspaper. In 1850 he became a co-founder of Sydney University. The later years of his life were spent in England. For an appreciation of Wentworth's contribution to the political development of Australia, see entry in (Pike 1966, pp. 582-589). Photographer unknown. |
