Sir George Grey, K.C.B., 1861. 70 x 92 mm. Oval print. Three quarter length portrait of Sir Edward George Grey seated with his elbow resting on a table. Grey entered the Army in 1829 and spent periods of exploration in Australia in 1837 and 1839-40. He was Lieutenant Governor of South Australia 1841-45, Governor of New Zealand 1846-54 and 1861-67, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope 1854-61 and Prime Minister of New Zealand 1877-79. This portrait is accompanied by a letter from Adolphe Beau of Forest Hill to the Secretary of the Royal Colonial Institute (dated 29 September 1898) offering copies for sale of this photograph. Beau states that: 'Having among my negatives of portraits, - (carefully preserved since relinquishing my studio in Regent Street) an excellent likeness of the late Sir George Grey, I believe it might interest many of his friends to know that such portrait is in existence ... Should you wish to see the same, I would be glad to call on you on my next coming to town, at the same time supplying you with any information as to sizes and prices'. A further note, of 3 October, states that he will bring a copy of the portrait to the Institute the following day. How Beau obtained the negative is unknown, and the date is certainly incorrect. Sir Godfrey Lagden. 144 x 197 mm. Mounted on card and signed on the mount. Head and shoulders portrait of Sir Godfrey Yeatman Lagden (1851-1934). Lagden joined the Civil Service in 1869 and worked in the Post Office until 1877. He became Chief Clerk to the State Secretary of the Transvaal in 1878 and in the following years acted as Secretary to various administrators, continuing his career in West Africa before being appointed Government Secretary, Basutoland in 1884. He served as Resident Commissioner, Basutoland 1893-1901, Commissioner for Native Affairs, Transvaal 1901-07 and Chairman, Inter-Colonial South African Native Affairs Commission 1902-04. Tagore with Michael Ney. 194 x 248 mm. Signed half length profile portrait in soft focus of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the Bengali poet, writer and artist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Seated on Tagore's lap is Michael Ney (c. 1925-1954), the son of Major Frederick Ney, founder of the Commonwealth Youth Movement. Michael Ney was killed in Kenya while acting as a police officer during the Mau Mau emergency. This photograph was taken during the Conference on Education held at Victoria and Vancouver in April 1929. This photograph was used in the Commonwealth in Focus Exhibition, 1982. Good condition.. |

In the same year he became a co-founder of The Australian newspaper. In 1850 he became a co-founder of Sydney University. The later years of his life were spent in England. Willingdon was MP for Hastings 1900-06 and for Bodmin 1906-10. He was a Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1905-12, Governor of Bombay 1913-19, of Madras 1919-24, Governor-General of Canada 1926-31 and Viceroy of India 1931-36. He married Lady Marie Adelaide, daughter of the 1st Earl Brassey, in 1892. The photograph is signed 'Willingdon' and 'Marie Willingdon 1924'. Photographers signature undeciphered. Good condition.. |

[Major General Orde Charles Wingate (1903-1944)]. 148 x 195 mm. Three quarter length portrait of Major General Orde Charles Wingate in bush uniform, probably taken in Burma. Wingate entered the Royal Artillery in 1923; he was attached to the Sudan Defence Force 1928-33 and served in Palestine and Trans-Jordan 1936-39. He was active behind enemy lines in Ethiopia in 1940-41 and was then selected to take charge of units to operate behind enemy lines in Burma. For this task he was promoted Temporary Brigadier General with the title of Commander of Special Force, India Command in 1943. [Major General James Wolfe (1727-1759)]. 153 x 184 mm. Photographic copy of a supposed three quarter length portrait of Wolfe against a background of ships of the line. Wolfe served in the Army from 1742 and after much active campaigning commanded the force which captured Quebec from the French in 1759, he himself dying in the hour of victory. The portrait is accompanied by a letter of 2 October 1925 from W. Morgan which apparently relates to enquiries to authenticate the picture: 'I am enclosing you a photograph of my portrait of 'Wolfe' which I should be glad if you would accept. The size of it is the same as the portrait in our own National Portrait Gallery but I like mine best as the seascape background with the three decker line of battleships is so attractive. I have taken your advice, and am in communication with the high Commissioner for Canada'. Photographer unknown. Good condition.. |

After amassing a fortune in the diamond mining industry at Kimberley and the formation of De Beers Consolidated Mines Company in 1888, Rhodes set about building his dream of a federal South African dominion under the rule of the British flag. He was instrumental in the founding of Rhodesia in 1890, but his plans were cut short when he was forced to resign the premiership of Cape Colony in 1896 after the abortive Jameson Raid of the previous year.
