Content and context

The collection was compiled by Major Geoffrey Tylden (1883-1970), an authority on imperial military units.

A collection of loose prints of various sizes, printed reproductions and other ephemera relating to the uniforms of overseas military units. The prints are by various photographers. The file also includes a photocopy copy of Tylden's Royal Commonwealth Society Library Talk - 'The history of the overseas armed forces' (10 April 1960).

1 The Commanding Officers of the Cape Town Volunteers. 114 x 140 mm. Group portrait of Colonel Eustace, Captain Porter, Colonel Dupray and Colonel Tucker. Various handwritten annotations, in both ink and pencil, can be found on the reverse of the print. Photograph by Arthur Green.

2 Captain John Manning, St Thomas Troop, Barbados Yeomanry Cavalry, 1861. 104 x 155 mm. Full length uniformed portrait of Captain John Manning. There are ink annotations probably made by two different hands on the reverse of this photograph. One appears to be instructions to a printer for how this photograph is to appear in a publication. The other gives details of the uniform worn by Manning. Photographer unknown.

5 'members of the Newcastle Mounted Rifles, May, 1879'. 95 x 55 mm. Group portrait of members of the Newcastle Mounted Rifles, taken at Fort Pine, Zululand. The figures in the group are H. Simpson, K. Osborne, J.O. Player, W. Napier and J. Grant. The photographer is unknown, but the caption below the photograph reads 'Photograph given by Mr. H.C. Player, Empangeni'.

6 Officer of Jamaica Light Horse Volunteers, 1862-1867. 53 x 86 mm. Full length portrait of an unidentified officer. The annotation continues 'From the collection of the Marquess of Cambridge'. Another annotation, in a different hand and ink, appears to give instructions to a printer as to how this photograph should be subtitled in a publication.

7 Cape mounted Rifleman, Full Dress. 114 x 147 mm. Photograph, mounted on card, of a painting from an unidentified publication. There are a number of annotations on the reverse, at least some of which refer to uniform. Unfortunately, they are not all complete as the card upon which the photograph has been mounted has, at some stage, been reduced from its original size losing some of the annotations in the process.

8 Kaffrarian Rifles acting as M.I. [i.e. Military Intelligence] S.A. [i.e. South African] War 1900 in O.F.S. [i.e. Orange Free State]. 101 x 53 mm. Showing a mounted unit on patrol. The annotation continues 'after [?]Jammenberg, and so mounted on Basuto ponies'. Photographer unknown.

9 D Coy., Cape Town Highlanders. 201 x 137 mm. The annotation on the reverse, in a different hand to the title, reads 'Darling St., Cape Town, before embarking for Port Nolloth in transit for O'okiep. Time: some time early in 1900. D Coy spent about a year in garrison there before returning'. It then appears to be initialled but these are not clear. Photographer unknown.

10 June 1911 Cape Regiments Lord Roberts inspecting S.A. [South African] Contingent in London. 127 x 86 mm. Showing Field Marshall Earl Roberts inspecting troops from various South African units at the Duke of York's School, london. These troops formed some of the many contingents which came to London for the Coronation procession of King George V. A number of different annotations appear on the reverse including one which may identify some of those pictured. Photograph by Gale and Polden, Aldershot.
