Photographer(s) unknown.

A collection of loose modern prints measuring approximately 245 x 180 mm. This prints were copied from an album containing 53 prints compiled during the voyage. Included with the prints are xeroxes of the original explanatory captions. The R.Y.S. 'St George' was owned by Ernest James Wythes (1868-1949); the compiler and/or photographer has not been identified.

The original album was lent to the Royal Commonwealth Society for copying by Mr and Mrs A.C.B. Unwin in 1979.

1 [The King of Samoa's Palace]. 244 x 181 mm. View looking towards the circular thatched building, with a group of Samoan nobles seated on the ground in front and a group of soldiers on parade in the foreground. The caption reads 'This is the King of Samoa's Palace. The soldiers are the Kings of Honolulu who went to Samoa and endeavoured to take the island. I got it mostly to show the Kings Palace'.

2 Yacht St George in dry dock, Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand. 176 x 244 mm. General view looking along the boat from the bows. The 'St George' is barquentine rigged. The remainder of the caption reads 'The figure in White is 2nd coo' before it cuts off.

3 [Street Scene, Colombo, Sri Lanka]. 243 x 176 mm. View in the native quarter of Colombo, with thatched houses lining the roadway and a number of Ceylonese posed in the foreground. The caption reads 'This is one of the streets of Colombo. The trees are very green and full of leaf all the year round. The houses are the native houses'.

5 [Royal Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii, 1886]. 243 x 176 mm. Showing crowds in the gardens, with the palace buildings in the background. The caption reads 'This is a view of the Royal Palace on the 50th birthday of the late King'. The King referred to in the caption is King David Kalakaua (1836-1891).

6 Sydney harbour, St George in Naval An[chorage]. 243 x 161 mm. View from the quayside looking towards the 'St George' moored in Sydney Harbour, with Fort Denison or Pinchgut visible in the background. The caption cuts off after the 'n'.

7 [Visit of King and Queen of Hawaii to Captain Cook's Monument, 1880s]. 243 x 182 mm. Showing King David Kalakaua (1836-1891) and his sister Liliuokalani (1838-1917) standing in front of the obelisk erected near the spot at which Captain Cook was killed in 1779. The caption reads 'This is a visit by the King and Queen of Honolulu to Captn. Cook's monument at the island of Hawaii which is governed and owned by Honolulu. The King is the big man in white in front leaning on the gun, the woman on the other side is his sister. The next man his the King's Secretary and the next woman with the parasol is the Queen, but I must tell you she is not the reigning Queen, for since the King's death, his sister [viz. Liluokalani] is the reigning Queen. All the others are courtiers and servants'.
