A collection of loose modern prints measuring approximately 245 x 180 mm. This prints were copied from an album containing 53 prints compiled during the voyage. Included with the prints are xeroxes of the original explanatory captions. The R.Y.S. 'St George' was owned by Ernest James Wythes (1868-1949); the compiler and/or photographer has not been identified.
The original album was lent to the Royal Commonwealth Society for copying by Mr and Mrs A.C.B. Unwin in 1979.

[Visit of King and Queen of Hawaii to Captain Cook's Monument, 1880s]. 243 x 182 mm. Showing King David Kalakaua (1836-1891) and his sister Liliuokalani (1838-1917) standing in front of the obelisk erected near the spot at which Captain Cook was killed in 1779. The caption reads 'This is a visit by the King and Queen of Honolulu to Captn. Cook's monument at the island of Hawaii which is governed and owned by Honolulu. The King is the big man in white in front leaning on the gun, the woman on the other side is his sister. The next man his the King's Secretary and the next woman with the parasol is the Queen, but I must tell you she is not the reigning Queen, for since the King's death, his sister [viz. Liluokalani] is the reigning Queen. All the others are courtiers and servants'. Good condition.. |
