Thomas Sedgwick (d. 1929) was a vigorous advocate of juvenile emigration. He led a party of fifty British boys to New Zealand in 1910 to carry out farm work, and took a further fifty boys to Ontario in 1912.
A collection of 3 albums (now disbound) containing a small number of original photographs as well as letters, pamphlets, press cuttings and memoranda. The photographs are spread throughout volumes 1 and 2. Volume 3, 1913- (which was marked vol. IV inside) has no original photographs. Images reproduced in cuttings and articles are not listed.
Presented by Thomas Sedgwick in 1928.

There is a passing reference to him as a minor philanthropist in Constantine, Stephen (ed.) Canon David John Garland. 90 x 140 mm with signature (probably facsimile). In volume 1, part 2, number 112 (previously vol. 1, p.75). David Garland was born in Dublin in 1864 and took Holy Orders in Australia (where he spent the rest of his life) in 1889. Apart from his parochial ministry, he was actively involved in religious education, and a letter from him (volume I, part 2, number 113) indicates his support for Sedgwick's scheme. He served as a Chaplain in World War I, and became an enthusiastic promoter of Anzac Day celebrations. He died in 1939. (Nairn and Searle 1981, p.619-620). |
