English Harbour [i.e. Saint Johns], Antigua. 290 x 217 mm. A view from Ordnance Bay looking south along English Harbour to the sea. In the middle distance, jutting out into the bay from the right, is the dockyard of English Harbour. Situated on the south coast of Antigua 12 miles from St. John's the dockyard works were substantially completed by 1746 although the surviving buildings are of later date. The dockyard was abandoned in 1889 although the harbour itself was used by men of war until the mid 1890's and for several years following this English Harbour was the port of call for steamers of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. On the hillside opposite the dockyard stands Clarence House, built for the accommodation of Prince William Henry (afterwards Duke of Clarence and King William IV) who was on the Leeward Islands Station in command of H.M.S. Pegasus in 1787. On the farthest spit of land, nearest the ocean, stood Fort Berkeley, which, together with the Horse Shoe Battery on the eastern entrance, formed the harbour's seaward defences. The Administrator, Mr. Young, and good old Porter came off to the ship and we all went ashore together. The harbour was full of boats and canoes dressed with flags and the 'Bell Jetty' and the wharves were very gay with bunting, triumphal arches, and other decorations ... Much work was done during 1912 to improve matters: the damming of Bendal's Stream, the clearing of springs, the digging of wells and the building of a dam across the Body Ponds south-east of St. John's. Government House, Montserrat. 118 x 88 mm. A view showing the driveway and gabled front façade of Government House: 'The new Government House is quite a delightful place with one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen. I call it the 'Garden of lovely tones' for the shadows under the big trees are full of the softest violets and greens and rose. I wish I had it in Antigua. [Davidson-]Houston was rather a pet of my predecessor who allowed him almost carte blanche when building this house. The result is that it has already cost over £4000 and is not yet finished. The place is out of all proportion to the little Colony and the local complaints are loud ...' (Bell 1913, July 15). Creator: Unknown. Fair condition, some overall fading.. |

The doctor told Nell that his heart is really in a most serious state and I judged from what he said that the poor little chap is in a very bad way.' (Bell 1912, December 18). Creator: Unknown. [Model Village, Clare Hall, Antigua]. 263 x 210 mm. Showing an area newly laid out with small wooden cottages. This is part of the scheme referred to by Bell in a letter; having made a start of clearing away a 'dirty little rookery, called Hyndman's village, which is quite close to Government House', Bell commenced: 'laying out a 'model village' at Clare Hall, about a mile away from the town, and am hoping to be able to induce a lot of people who are now living in the most awful conditions in the town slums to move up there and start afresh in nice healthy surroundings. I am having a number of nice little cottages built which will be sold to the people on the 'hire-system'. Each will stand on its own plot of ground 50 feet by 100 and I hope that, in time, they will become neat little homesteads .... I can only spend £200 on my village this year, but am hoping to be able to make an appreciable start with that.' (Bell 1913, July 4). Creator: Unknown. Good condition.. |
