Showing Bell, dressed in full uniform, standing beside Kahaya, with servants and other members of the King's retinue in the background: 'We reached Mbarara, the principal town of Ankole, ... Kahaya, the King of Ankole, met me on the boundary of his territory and accompanied me to Mbarara. He is an enormous fellow. About 25 years of age, but very boyish looking. He is at least 6'6" in height and broader in proportion. Quite a young giant and he would make a great sensation if he were taken to London. Not at all bad looking and has a pleasant expression. When he came to meet me he was wearing a long black johr, embroidered in the usual way and a white embroidered cap. The long gown accentuated his tallness and he looked every yard a king. I took some photos of him later and these I will send you to look at. He is the man I fined 1000 head of cattle but he showed not a trace of rancour and seemed, on the contrary, much impressed by my clemency. As he owns at least 50,000 head of cattle, the fine was a mere flea-bite to him.' (Bell 1907, February 1).

Showing the Kimbugwe of Toro standing with three other figures in the courtyard outside a thatched building: 'From Kasinga we crossed over in canoes to the Toro side, and .... came to our camp. Although this was at Katwe, in the disputed territory, the Katikiro, and Kimbugwe, another of the principal chiefs of Toro, had come to meet me and give me a welcome to Toro. The camp they had prepared for me was quite the best I have yet seen ... They are both most intelligent men, and although they were almost barbarians when Lugard was in Toro, 15 years ago, they are now quite up to date.' (Bell 1907, February 15).

1907
55 Sandbanks on the Semliki (where I shot a strange turtle) [1907]. A general view of sandbanks on the Semliki River. The turtle referred to is probably the one shot by Burton rather than Bell: 'Burton killed an extraordinary sort of turtle, with a soft flabby back and paws with long claws instead of the usual flippers. It looked like some antediluvian beast, and must have weighted fully 60 lbs.' (Bell 1907, March 1).
Good condition..

He was mounted on a smart horse, which he sat very well, and looked most imposing. Like Kahaya, he is the tallest and biggest man in his country, but he is a good deal older and more dignified than his cousin of Ankole. He understands a little English and is very progressive.' We propped open its tremendous jaws and posed him so as to let it appear that he was creeping stealthily up towards me, who am seated on the grass, placidly reading a newspaper. It made me quite a realistic picture.' (Bell 1907, March 1).

Kassagama, although there was no howdah, begged to be allowed to have a ride on the animal and very pluckily settled himself on a mattress which had been tied on the animal's back. With his great umbrella of state held over him by the mahout, he made an impressive figure and I took a good photograph of him in that position.' (Bell 1907-1909, March 1909).

I was delighted to find, on arrival at Mubendi, that much progress had been made in establishing the new sanatorium there. A very fine large house, built of sun-dried bricks and handsomely thatched, had been constructed for me. The flat top of the mountain is 5,200 feet above the sea, and the difference between the climate there and that of the lake shore is enormously to its advantage. I think that, in the days to come, this will be a flourishing hill-station where officials, working in hot and unhealthy districts, can come and recuperate.' (Bell 1946, page 199).
Fair condition, some fading..

Another milestone in the growth of Entebbe is the building of an Anglican church. I laid the foundation stone of it some time ago and the walls are rising rapidly. It is rather surprising that we should have waited so long for this and, when looking at the imposing proportions of the Government House that I am building, I confess that I have felt rather ashamed when I have thought of the miserable little mud-walled, grass-thatched hut that has, for so long, served as our place of worship.'
