A collection of albumen prints which include views of the Middle East, Malta and Gibraltar by Robertson, Beato and others. The majority are of European works of arts and townscapes (many of the latter unidentified). There are also scenes at Woolwich. Plates 68-80 are uncaptioned and consist of miscellaneous engravings of weaponry, armour and archaeological sites. |

James Robertson, Superintendent and Chief Engraver of the Mint at Constantinople, remained in the Crimea after the departure of his more famous contemporary Roger Fenton and thus secured the only photographs of the remains of the Malakoff and Redan forts after the retreat of the Russian forces. Showing a British soldier standing beside the barrel of this huge cannon, with stone shot in the background. Pasted down with this is the following letterpress: 'This great piece of ordnance formed part of the arsenal of the Castle of Asia at the mouth of the Dardanelles, and was presented to Her Majesty by Sultan Abdul Aziz Khan, 1866. It is now in the Museum of Artillery, Woolwich. Length, 17 feet; diameter of powder chamber, 10 inches; diameter of bore, 25 inches; weight, 18 tons 14 cwt 3 qrs. The stone shot each weigh 670 lbs nearly. An inscription near the vent states that the weight of the shot is 240 okes = 679 lbs, powder due 17½ okes = 49.5 lbs. Degrees, 3.'. In addition, a second piece of letterpress reads: 'View of the muzzle, shewing (sic.) the inscriptions, which have been decyphered by Mr Redhouse, as follows, -.
