Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler (1873-1952) was born in Harrow on 19 May 1873. He was educated at Haileybury, and entered Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1891, where he became a Fellow in 1895 and an Honorary Fellow in 1925. Butler joined the Indian Civil Service in 1896, and was sent to the Punjab, where he became President of the Legislative Council in 1921. He was made Secretary of the Government of India Department for Education, Health and Lands in 1922, and President of the Council of State in 1924. He was Governor of the Central Provinces, 1925-1933, and Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man, 1933-1937. From 1937 to 1948 he was Master of Pembroke College. Butler died in Cambridge on 7 November 1952.

A letter from Delhi written after Butler had returned from a visit to Calcutta. The letter discusses Butler's meeting with Archbishop Foss Westcott, the future of army chaplains, politics, the arrival of Lord Inchcape of the Indian Retrenchment Committee, Butler's resentment at the appointment of Sir Basil Blackett as Finance Member of the Executive Council, and the appointment of Butler's brother, Sir Harcourt Butler, as Governor of Burma.
