Content and context

The East India Company was incorporated by a royal charter on 31 December 1600, and enjoyed a monopoly on trade with the East Indies.

A counterpart licence from the East India Company to William Cox, mariner, to trade in the Eastern Seas, notwithstanding the monopoly of the Company. The licence is indented with the impression of the Company's seal.

Purchased 1961. The identure was acquired at the same time as RCMS 240/27, Document of the Mosquito Nation. The Leonard P. Cox mentioned in this document may be related to William Cox.
