Content and context

William Robert Millar (1851-1924) was born on 1 June 1851. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1874, becoming Assistant Magistrate and Collector in Bengal. He was invalided in 1879, and retired that year. He died on 8 March 1924.

Three letters written by Millar in Dacca to his sister Louisa concerning his daily life and early administrative experience. The letters are accompanied by 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 175 (October, 1971), featuring the article 'A strut in the steel frame', which includes extracts from the letters. There is also an undated biographical note on Millar.
