Content and context

Dorothy Grace Wilkinson (née Stubbing) was born in 1904 and trained to be a teacher. During the early 1930s, she taught for the Church Missionary Society for four years at Kings College, Budo, Uganda. She returned to England in the late 1930s, during which time she married. From 1941 Wilkinson taught in several schools in Ghana including Achimota College (1941-1946), Achimota Training College (1946-1951), Kumasi College of Technology (1951-1957), and Winneba Training College (1958-1965). She was active in the Girl Guides both in England and in Africa. Her contributions to teaching and Guiding were recognised by the award of the MBE in 1959. She retired from teaching in 1965 and returned to England.

The collection includes a thesis submitted to the Teacher Training Department of Kumasi College of Technology, recollections of Wilkinson's resisidence in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, and an autobiographical audio recording.

Donated by Rosemary Mathew, niece of Mrs Wilkinson, in 2007.

RCS/RCMS 350 contains:
1 A thesis on experimental evaluation of teaching aid needs in Ghana schools. The thesis, submitted to the Teacher Training Department of Kumasi College of Technology, 1957, comprises one volume of text (123 pages), and two volumes containing c. 70 photographs. It is accompanied by the text of a play, 'A claim to the title' which was produced by a second year student on his Final Teaching Practice with Form Three boys in Kumasi.
