Content and context

Four volumes of newscuttings, three relating to Southern and East Africa and one to the Native Question in South Africa, and loose cuttings on related subjects. Many of the articles concern the activities of the colonial powers in Africa, notably Great Britain, Germany, Spain and France.

Stanley's expedition and his reported death, the Emin Pacha Relief Expedition, the murder of Major Edmund Musgrave Barttelot, the situation in Egypt, fighting between the British and Dervishes in Sudan, revolution in Uganda, Germany's involvement in East Africa, and the slave trade. The pages and cover of the volume are mounted in plastic sleeves.

2 Africa, volume II. Newscuttings from 'The Times' and other publications regarding, among other subjects, fighting between the British and Dervishes in Sudan and on the Nile, Germany's involvement in East Africa, including the Emin Pacha Relief Expedition, H.M. Stanley's expedition, relations between Spain and Morocco, the Anglo-Portuguese dispute over the Delagoa Bay Railway, missionaries in East Africa, the slave trade, relations between Italy and Abyssinia, the British South Africa Company, and affairs in the Congo, Egypt and South Africa. The cuttings are from 1889 with a few exceptions. The pages and cover of the volume are mounted in plastic sleeves.

Much of the scrapbook relates to South Africa, although there are articles concerning areas throughout Africa. Some of the subjects covered include the British South Africa Company, exploration, labour issues, mining, the slave trade and the deaths of noted individuals.
