Content and context

Sir Frank Herbert Brown (1868-1959) was born on 13 March 1968. He worked as leader writer and assistant editor of the 'Bombay Gazette' for five years, and was editor of the 'Indian Daily Telegraph', Lucknow, for two years. He became London correspondent of 'The Times of India', and in 1902 entered the office of 'The Times', where he served on the Editorial Staff until 1954. He was Honorary Secretary of the East India Association, 1927-1954, and Honorary Treasurer of the Royal India, Pakistan and Ceylon Society from 1932. Brown contributed to the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' and 'Dictionary of national biography', and to chapters on India and Burma in the 'Annual register', 1927-1946. He was knighted in 1937, and died on 14 February 1959.
