Covering Dates 1888–1921

Content and context

'The field, the farm and the garden. The country gentleman's newspaper' was published weekly in London from 1853. The journal articles in the collection were probably written by T.L. Gilmour (see notes in volumes 2 and 3). This may be Thomas Lennox Gilmour C.B.E. (1859-1936). Gilmour was educated at Lincoln Grammar School and Edinburgh University, and was Private Secretary to the Earl of Roseberry, 1885-1903. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1887, and called to the Bar in 1890. He worked in journalism from 1880, and was the Editor of 'The Finland bulletin', 1900-1905. He was Managing Director of the Mozambique Company in London, 1904-1913, and Director of the Trans-Zambesia Railway Company Ltd. The name S.C. Gilmour on the spine of some of the scrapbooks may be the compiler of the volumes. This is Samuel Carter Gilmour, half-brother of Thomas Lennox Gilmour, and he was a contributor to 'The field'.

Ten volumes of cuttings from 'The field', including a few articles from other publications, and loose cuttings concerning the Malay Peninsula. The volumes concern countries throughout the world, but in particular Australia, British East Africa (Kenya), Canada, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Rhodesia, South Africa, Uganda, United States and the West Indies. The articles cover a wide range of subjects, including administration, agriculture, the British Empire, climate, colonisation, emigration, expeditions, geography, labour, polar exploration, railways, trade, transport, travel and wildlife, and organisations such as the British Association, Royal Colonial Institute and Royal Geographical Society. At the front of each volume is an index of names, places and subjects.

The provenance of the collection is unknown.
