Content and context

John (Jack) Methuen Coote joined the Uganda Administration in 1905, and was District Officer, 1909-1912. During 1909-1910 he was posted to Lake Kivu as Political Officer, where he was involved in a dispute with the local Belgian forces over the British presence in the territory. He served as an Army Major in the First World War, and during the German East Africa campaign in 1917 was Liaison Officer with the Belgians following the occupation of Tabora.

Correspondence, a printed pamphlet and photographs relating predominantly to Coote's time in East Africa, but with a few photographs from Persia.
