Ways and means. A cartoon satirising the economies of Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales, during the financial depression of the period. Gipps tried to finance assisted immigration from the proceeds of land sales, but was left with thousands of immigrants and no money for their passage when this source of funds ran out. The other figure in the cartoon is Francis Mereweather, the immigration agent in Sydney. 1 item. |

Beautifully linked. 'Political sketches by B.B no. 3'. The cartoon dates from around the same period as RCMS 278/65/1, and may be by Benjamin Bailey, an obscure printer of the time. It satirises the agitation by residents of the Port Phillip District (now Victoria) for separation from New South Wales. New South Wales is depicted as a convict crone, with Hyde Park barracks in the background. The figures on the left are three of the six representatives of Port Phillip on the N.S.W. Legislative Council. Two have been identified as the Presbyterian preacher Dr John Dunmore Lang and Dr (later Sir) Charles Nicholson. The figure with the medicine bottle is probably Dr Alexander Thomson. 1 item. |
