Content and context

Reports on settlements in Australia visited by Backhouse and Walker during 1833-1835, probably contemporary copies. The 'Australian dictionary of biography' has the following entry on the reports (vol. I, p. 45): 'They gave (Sir George) Arthur eight valuable reports on the penal settlements of Macquarie Harbour and Port Arthur, the Aboriginal establishments on Flinders Island...In New South Wales and its dependencies Governor Bourke encouraged similar work in 1835-37...Their reports were sent to London Friends and to the Colonial Office'.

The provenance of the collection is unknown.

2 Report on Port Arthur and Norfolk Island. At the start of the volume is a 'Copy of a letter to the Colonial Secretary on the Aboriginal establishment on Flinders Island in 1833', dated Great Swan Port, Oyster Bay, 15 January 1834 (7 pages). This is followed by a 'Report on a visit to the penal settlement of Norfolk Island', dated 30 June 1835 (13 pages), with a six-page appendix at the front. Both items are marked as copies.
