A wide range of material concerning different parts of Australasia, but mainly Australia and New Zealand. Some of the collections are comprised of single items, such as pictures and maps. There are also a significant number of photocopies or photographs of original material. One of the collections is in Maori; the others are in English.

The collections were received by the R.C.S. from a number of different sources, details of which are given with the relevant collection.

2 Australian natural history paintings. Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 1¾'' x 7½'', sold by John Sands of Sydney. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The artists include Arteh, Koddi and M. Simpson. There is some duplification of subject, but with slight variations in each case. The bookmarks are labelled on the reverse, and are accompanied by an envelope containing typescript labels.

4 Notes on the Australian blue gum tree. 'Notes on the eucalyptus globulus or Australian blue gum tree', 8 pages. There is a covering letter from William Bell to C.W. Eddy, Secretary of the Royal Colonial Institute, dated 9 June (no year), 1 page; an undated letter to Eddy from a colleague (the signature is illegible) who had read Bell's manuscript, 2 pages; and a press cutting commenting on the eucalyptus. The latest date referred to in the text in 1872. As Mr Eddy died in October 1874, the paper must date from 1873 or 1874.

5 The writing of colonial history. The typescript of a paper read to the Royal Colonial Institute, 26 March 1895, with manuscript corrections. The lecture discusses Bonwick's experiences, chiefly in England, of researching Australian history.

6 Mining scenes in Australia. Two undated pencil and watercolour sketches. The first is of a group of diggers by a stream with hills on either side and a tall hill in the background. It is marked in pencil 'outhern diggins' (the start of the word is trimmed off) and 'Browne'. The second picture is of a party of men with pack animals moving along a path with hill slopes in the background. It is marked in pencil 'Diggings' and 'Browne'.

11 Argemone. An undated copy by 'W.N.' of a poem by A.L. Gordon, including comments and the introductory note 'The M.S. is in the possession of a South Australian squatter'. The original poem was written for Miss Riddoch's album in 1869, although it remained unpublished until F.M. Robb's edition of Gordon's 'Poems' in 1912.

16 On the land legislation of the Australian colonies. A paper attacking the alienation of Crown Land by popularity-seeking ministries, 'The Imperial Government, which never had a colonial policy worthy of that name'. It proceeds to criticise 'the selfish and short-sighted resistence offered to public opinion and to the requirements of an altered condition of society by the pastoral tenants of the Crown', the denial of liberal legislation owing to the action of dominant interests.

17 An interesting historical event in Australian history. A translation of the Dutch account, published in 1647, of the wreck of the 'Batavia' on the Abrolhos Islands and subsequent events of 1628-1629 (85 pages). Some extracts from Saville-Kent's 'A naturalist in Australia' have been added, and there are four pages of illustrations taken from the Dutch account.

18 The portraiture of Tasman. A typescript 'survey of alleged likenesses of the navigator and discoverer in the Royal Commonwealth Society and elsewhere 1965', 17 pages and 4 attached photographs and portraits. The paper is concerned chiefly with the full-length portrait of Tasman in the R.C.S. and the family group in the National Library of Australia. It is accompanied by related correspondence, 1893-1976; eighteen loose photographs of Tasman and members of his family; and a few notes and press cuttings. There is also a copy of 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 52, April 1961, including the article 'The problem of Tasman's portraits' (pp. 1-3), which contains a summary of the first draft of the typescript.

22 List of minerals discovered in South Australia. 'Classified list of minerals discovered in the Province of South Australia to the close of the year 1844. Showing the class, family and species to which each specimen belongs, with its description and locality. To which is subjoined a summary of the geology of the located districts'. The geological summary is contained in the last two pages. A pencil note above the heading records 'Copy of this list given to the Surveyor-General [E.C. Frome] 11 February 1845'. On the back in another hand, probably Frome's, is written 'Minerals - South Australia Mr. Burr'.

23 On the interior of South Australia. The manuscript has no formal title, but written on the back, in E.C. Frome's handwriting, is 'Dec/42. Mem. Mr. Burr on the Interior South Australia'. The work sets out to prove that 'we Southern Australians are not chopped off from the rest of the world: hemmed in on every side'. Burr discusses the importance of South Australia to Britain as a means of absorbing surplus population and for the advancement of Christianity, civilisation and science.

28 Province of South Australia land grant. A parchment copy of an original land grant of 1839, including a sketch map of the property. There are two authenticating declarations by W.T. Scott and J.C. Lovely, 1875, and certification by John Warren Bakewell, Notary Public, Adelaide. The grant does not indicate where the property in question was located, other than 'N° 382' in the province of South Australia. The grantees were G.F. Angas of Jeffrey's Square, St Mary Axe, and H. Kingscote of Bank Buildings, both in London, and J.R. Todd of Portland Place, Middlesex.

29 South Australian Company report on lands. 'Summary of the report on the Company's farm lands at 31 December 1879', 21 lithographed manuscript pages with a map. The report describes various plots with a view to housing or mining development within 10, 20, and 50 miles of Adelaide. The map includes circles indicating these distances.

30 Watercolour of Robert Gouger's residence. Two photographs (with negatives), 1958, each 8½'' x 6½'', of a watercolour by John Skipper of Robert Gouger's residence at Glenelg, South Australia, and of the inscription (now lost) on its rear. The collection also includes undated xerox copies of the following items: the catalogue entry for the original watercolour in the Mitchell Library, Sydney; a letter to Miss P. Mander Jones from E.B. and K.A. Everett, 12 July 1958, from whom it was purchased; a letter from Mander-Jones to the Mitchell Librarian on the authenticity of the picture, 1 September 1958; and a memorandum by Mander-Jones on this subject, 31 August 1959.

Two copies of a letter written from Port Phillip, 2 May 1836, discussing the foundation of the settlement at Melbourne in 1803 and its bright prospects. The collection comprises a manuscript copy (7 pages), which may be contemporary, and an undated typescript duplicate (4 pages). There are two accompanying pieces of correspondence, 1945-1946, regarding the gift of the manuscript copy to the R.C.S.

Two undated copies of a seven-page letter from Norah Young to her children, 1916, describing her voyage to Australia and early years there; photocopies of notes on the career of Reginald St Chad Young, originally written in 1965 (4 pages); xerox copies of photographs in the possession of the family (6 pages); and a family tree (1 page). The papers are accompanied by 'Glimpses of the past: a long life ended', a photocopied transcript of an article that appeared in the 'Adelaide advertiser' shortly after Norah Young's death, which reproduces some of the material found in the letter to her children (7 pages). There is also a draft of the article on the collection that appeared in 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 235, May-June 1988 (9 pages); a note on the collection (1 page); and correspondence between Terry Barringer, R.C.S. 43 The founding of Australia. A printed copy by the Medici Society Ltd of London of 'The founding of Australia at Sydney Cove by Captain Arthur Phillip R.N., First Governor and Captain-General of New South Wales, on Saturday, the 26th January 1788, after landing from H.M. Brig Supply. The Governor about to propose the health of His Majesty King George III just after the Union Jack has been hoisted and saluted by the Guard of Marines', 583 x 456 mm, 1937. The picture is accompanied by a printed outline drawing of the painting, including a description of its history and the names of the individuals depicted. There is also an undated, one-page typescript describing the painting's background and listing recipients of other reproductions.

45 Letter on the town of Gore. A letter from Thomas Hocken, Dunedin, to Stanley Edwards regarding a Maori name for the town of Gore. The location appeared to have no prior place-name, and Hocken suggests several Maori words suitable for this purpose.

46 Maori armour documents. The volume contains two inserted documents relating to the gift of a suit of armour by King William IV to the New Zealand Chief Eruera Maihi Patuone. There is an inventory on an official form relating to the delivery of the armour from the Tower of London, 16 July 1836, for shipment to New Zealand and presentation to 'Patone'. There is also a receipt for the armour and clothing, 4 November 1837, with Patuone's mark.

48 Early reminiscences of Auckland. A typescript 'to his Excellency the Governor General of New Zealand' (Lord Bledisloe), containing personal recollections written at Bledisloe's suggestion. The reminiscences begin with Morrow's arrival in New Zealand with his father in 1861, and include comments on government, land policy and the Maori Wars. The typescript is accompanied by 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 51, March 1961, comprising a verbatim copy of the typescript with an introductory note.

49 Report of meeting of Maori chiefs. A photocopy of a report in Maori by Parakaia Te Pouepa of a meeting of chiefs from Manawatu (Palmerston North), Waikanae, Otaki, Ngati Toa of Porirua, Waikato and Te Arawa (Roturua area) at Otaki on 17 September 1861. The meeting discussed the setting up of a Maori King in the Waikato Area. Most of the chiefs were opposed to this idea, and accepted Queen Victoria's representative, Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, as the chief of the country. They passed a motion that a letter should be written to Queen Victoria asking for an extension of Browne's term of office. There are references to Browne and to Sir George Grey, who replaced him a month after the meeting took place. Beneath Parakaia Te Pouepa's signature is the following: 'To Toki in Wellington, for you to send on to the Maori Newspaper so that the tribes of New Zealand may know of our discussion. When you have made a copy of this report send it to Ahitana te Hira for keeping'. . The report is accompanied by eight related pieces of correspondence between D.H. Simpson, R.C.S. Librarian, T.S. Karetu of the New Zealand High Commission, who provided the R.C.S. with a summary of the document, and Alice Adams, 1965.

50 Cartoons of New Zealand MPs. Eight printed cartoons, captioned and undated, chiefly of a satirical nature. The final three pictures, of William Pember Reeves, Westby Brook Perceval and George Beetham, are accompanied by a one-page profile of each M.P.

51 Pictures from New Zealand. Undated postcards, envelopes and photographs containing images from New Zealand. The pictures include the War Canoe Race, tattooed Maori, 'tiki', South African postmen, a pictorial Christmas message and Robley surrounded by dried heads. There is also a painting by Robley of the 'Hongi or old Nose Salute'. The images are accompanied by a letter from Robley to the Secretary, Royal Colonial Institute, June 1920, enclosing a postcard with an original painting of a tiki and offering various items for sale, and the reply of the Librarian, Evans Lewin, 7 June 1920.

57 Papers on the Queen's visit to Auckland, 1953. A three-page memorandum by S.J. Robinson on the Queen's visit, enclosed with a letter to A.J. Whiteway of 30 December 1953. There is also a letter to Robinson from Martin Charteris, 28 December 1953, enclosing a photograph, included in this collection, of the Queen's visit to his home. The letters and memorandum are undated typescript copies.

58 Sketch of the Conflict Group. A pen and ink sketch, 8'' x 13'', of a chart of the Conflict Group of Islands at the eastern end of New Guinea, lat. 10°40S, Long. 151°10E, signed 'E. Boosé'. A chart of the Islands by H.A. Wickham was sent to James Boosé, Librarian of the Royal Colonial Institute, in November 1899, asking him to forward it to the Admiralty. This is presumably a copy of that chart. It is accompanied by the letter from Wickham that was sent with the original map.
