Content and context

Edward Robert Hugh Paget (1910-1981) studied history, and worked for the British Council for thirty years, serving as its representative in Jamaica, the Netherlands, Mexico, Poland and Australia. As the first representative in Jamaica, he helped to found the Jamaican Library Service, and in London he was the first director of the Hans Crescent Hostel for overseas students. In Australia, he organised exhibitions to mark the bicentenary of Captain James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks's landing, and the opening of the Sydney Opera House.

Text of a summer school address given at Trinity College, Cambridge, in April 1950 (30 pages).
