The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or Mounties, is the national police service of Canada. The force was created by the Canadian Government as the North West Mounted Police in 1873 to establish control over the North West Territories, and in 1885 helped to defeat the North West Rebellion. Members of the N.W.M.P. served in the Canadian Mounted Rifles during the Boer War. In recognition of its role in this conflict, the force was renamed the Royal North West Mounted Police in 1904. In 1920 it merged with Dominion Police Force to become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and was given responsibility for law enforcement throughout Canada. During the twentieth century the force took on intelligence duties, which passed to the new Canadian Security Intelligence Service in 1984.
