Robert Melville (1723-1809) was born on 12 October 1723. He attended the grammar school at Leven and Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities. He became ensign in the 25th Foot in 1744, with which he served in Flanders. He was made captain in 1751, and major in 1756. Melville became Lieutenant-Governor of Guadeloupe in 1759, and Governor in 1760. He was governor of the ceded islands, 1763-1770. He died on 29 August 1809.
