Stephen William Silver (1819-1905), a London shipping merchant, was the owner of the York Gate Geographical and Colonial Library. In 1882 he published a catalogue of the library's holdings. He was a member of the Royal Geographical Society, and in 1905 sold his library to the society. The library's collections include watercolours by George French Angas.
A letter expressing Angas' interest in working as an illustrator for Cassell's 'Illustrated travel'.
