Reference RCMS 113/96
Creator Moshesh, c 1786-1870, Chief of the Basuto
Covering Dates circa 1867
Extent and Medium 1 folder; paper; Mixed scripts
Content and context

Moshesh or Moshoeshoe (c. 1786-1870), Chief of the Basuto, agreed a treaty in 1843 that created Basutoland as a native state under British protection.

Sir Theophilius Shepstone (1817-1893) was Secretary for Native Affairs, Natal.

Robert William Keate (1814-1873) was Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, 1867-1872.

Two letters signed and sealed by Chief Moshesh, with undated typescript and negative photostat copies. The letters were probably written for Moshesh by a European advisor.

Presented by Morton Green, J.P.

Further information

The letters are reproduced in 'Basutoland records', vol. III (1883), pp. 774-775 and 777-779, compiled by G.M. Theal.
