Sir David Gill (1843-1914) was appointed H.M. Astronomer at the Cape in 1879, and retired in 1906. He was a guest of Admiral Moore during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later George V and Queen Mary) to Natal. Moore was the Commander in Chief of the Cape of Good Hope and the West Coast of Africa Station.
A copy of a letter from Sir David Gill describing the Royal Visit of 1901, 7 pages. The address and ending are missing from the letter. It includes reference to several vessels and persons of eminence. There are two accompanying letters regarding the gift of the letter to the R.C.S., and a memorandum by D.H. Simpson, R.C.S. Librarian, providing background information.
Presented by Mrs Sheila Himsworth, County Archives, Guildford, November 1990.
