Content and context

Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton (1837-1915), 3rd Baronet, was born on 26 January 1837, the eldest son of Sir Edward North Buxton, 2nd Baronet. He attended Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, and succeeded his father in 1858. He was the Liberal M.P. for King's Lynn, 1865-1868, and Governor of South Australia, 1895-1898. He died on 28 October 1915 at Cromer.

Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), traveller and sportsman, explored the Nile region, 1862-1865, during which he named the lake Albert Nyanza. He was appointed Governor-General of the Equatorial Nile basin for four years in 1869.

Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871), 1st Baronet, was a geologist.

Letters to Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton from Sir Samuel Baker and Sir Roderick Murchison. There is a covering letter from Mrs M.C. Ponsonby, 8 February 1939, presenting the letters to the R.C.S., and the Librarian's reply, 9 February 1939. The folder also includes 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 19 (July 1958), comprising the article 'Sir Samuel Baker and the slave trade', which transcribes the letters and comments on them.
