Content and context

Dr Thomas Hardie Dalrymple served as a medical officer in Sierra Leone, 1931-1933, Nigeria, 1933-1935, and Gambia, 1935-1937. He returned to Nigeria in 1937 where he worked until his retirement in 1950.

Material by Thomas Dalrymple and others relating to Plateau Province in Nigeria and the Cameroons.

The collection was given by Thomas Dalrymple to his colleague Dr Rex Cheverton who presented it to the R.C.S. in 1983.

Governor's message on the outbreak of war. Two copies of Bourdillon's message to the Nigerian people, which was broadcast on 3 September 1939. There is two-page printed copy in English and a three-page typescript version in Pidgin entitled 'Make every man savvy'. The latter message was read at Banso.

The story of Pagan. 'The story of Pagan: Dulumi Spirit ex Fobour and Jawara Kogi Hill', a typescript account of beliefs in Plateau Province, 3 pages. The signature appears to read Abubakar Katsina, who is also the writer of an accompanying letter, written from Jos on 1 June 1956 to 'Dr', 1 page.
