Harold Smith was born in Hulme, Manchester, and attended Magdalen College, Oxford. He was employed as a Labour Officer in Lagos, Nigeria, between 1955 and 1960. According to his account, he refused to participate in British attempts to rig the Independence elections, and his subsequent career was blighted.
Material relating to Nigeria and its Independence elections, 1955-1960, stored on 2 IBM disks, ASC II format, presumably recorded in 1993. There is also a CD-Rom, burned 17 April 2003, containing the data from the disks. These items are accompanied by seven pages of related correspondence, 1992-1993.
Presented by Mrs Carol Smith, wife of Harold Smith, 23 March 1993.
