Content and context

A wide range of material relating to different parts of Africa, notably Nigeria, Rhodesia, South Africa and Uganda. Many of the papers relate to Europeans who worked in Africa, including army officers and missionaries. A number of the collections are comprised of single items, such as letters or artwork. There is also a significant amount of photocopied material.

The collections were received by the R.C.S. from a number of different sources, details of which are given with the relevant collection.

1 Account of the apparition of Mungo Park. Seven pages of notes on supernatural events, including three pages describing the appearance of an apparition of Mungo Park to his sister, Mrs Thomson, in 1805-1806. There are two further pages addressed to Miss Erskine. The notes are accompanied by 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 72 (December 1962), including the article 'An apparition of Mungo Park' (pp. 1-3), which transcribes with notes the part of the document relating to Mungo Park.

2 The slave trade between East Africa and the United States. An undated memorandum regarding the extent to which slaves shipped to America included Africans from the eastern side of the continent, consisting largely of extracts from T. Fowell Buxton's 'The African slave trade and its remedy' (1840). The latest date mentioned in the memorandum is 1909.

4 Diaries of Edward and Francis Pocock in Africa. Undated copies of Rhodes House Library's transcription (133 pages) and index cards (25 pages) of the diaries kept by the Pococks while in Africa, 1874-1877. The bulk of the entries in the diaries are by Francis Pocock, but there are a small number of entries by Edward Pocock. Some of the early entries may be by Frederick Barker, a colleague of the Pococks, who died on 27 April 1875.

8 Letter from Sir Samuel Baker. A letter to an unnamed correspondent concerning adding 'Victoria Nile or' before 'Somerset River' on a map shortly to be published, presumably in Baker's 'The Albert N'Yanza', originally published in 1864. The map in the original volume is marked 'R Somerset or Victoria Nile'. The recipient may have been Stephen William Silver (1819-1905), a friend of Baker's, to whom other letters given by Sir Harry Wilson to the R.C.S. in 1916 were addressed.

9 Journal of Ignaz Knoblecher. 'Reise journal der expedition am Weissen Flusse-Central Afrika' describing Knoblecher's journey south from Khartoum to Gondokoro and Rejaf, 1849-1850. This is a transcription in German from the original in Codex 14152, 'Biblioteca Palatina Vindobonensis', Vienna, made by Richard Gray for his 'A history of Southern Sudan' (1961).

10 Letters from Austrian consuls in Africa. Letters in German from Austrian Consuls-General at Cairo and their agents at Khartoum dealing with events in Southern Sudan, including the work of the Vicariate of Central Africa, consular returns from Khartoum and provisional instructions for the Consulate at Khartoum, c. 170 pages. The letters were transcribed from originals in the Östereichisches Staatsarchiv in Vienna by Richard Gray for his 'A history of Southern Sudan' (1961).

11 Letter from General Gordon to Sir Samuel Baker. A letter from King William's Town, South Africa, 21 July 1882 (4 pages), commenting on events in Egypt and on nationalism as a force there and elsewhere. There is an accompanying newscutting of circa 1969 concerning the letter. The folder also includes one of the notes issued by General Gordon during the siege of Khartoum, 1884-1885. The papers are accompanied by 'Royal Commonwealth Society library notes', no. 159 (March 1970), including the article 'General Gordon on nationalism' (pp. 1-3), which transcribes Gordon's letter in full and comments on its background. There is also a letter from R.E.H. Baily, 25 August 1970, presenting the Khartoum note to the R.C.S., and the Librarian's reply, 3 September 1970.

13 Papers on the Congo basin treaties. Correspondence relating to Carrington's investigations into the impact of the Congo Basin Treaties, including a negative response from the Foreign Office. 14 Poison proof. A photocopy of the transcript of a short story read on the B.B.C. World Service, July-August 1968, based on a true incident in the life of Michael Wilson in British Somaliland. Wilson is referred to as Tom Blake in the story. There is an accompanying manuscript letter from Mrs Ursula E. Sykes-Thompson providing background information, 17 August 1998.

16 Letters from George Balamoan in Nigeria. Eighteen letters, written chiefly on air letter forms, sent to Mrs Joan Braunholtz when Balamoan was teaching at the Bornu State College of Basic Studies, Maiduguri. The first letter, 14 April 1978, was written soon after his arrival in Nigeria. The last, 2 March 1980, was written from Sudan after he had left his post due to ill health, and reflects his disenchantment with the amenities and technical abilities he found in Nigeria.

17 Letter from Edward Bovill to Lord Lugard. A letter enclosing a copy of Bovill's 'Caravans of the old Sahara'. Bovill comments on the importance of Lady Lugard's 'A tropical dependency' and the need for fresh material to be incorporated. He also writes about his own happy recollections of Nigeria.

22 Letters from Oliver Raymont in Nigeria. Undated extracts from letters written to Raymont's parents and sisters. The letters do not cover any major events, but provide an insight into the life of a subaltern of the period. Raymont discusses his regimental duties, social life, sport and views on Nigeria and its people. The extracts appear to be from a longer account and are in two sections. The first batch of letters cover 22 June 1935 - 6 January 1937 (112 pages), and relate to when Raymont was stationed in Enugu and Ibadan, with short spells in Kachia Camp in the north and Lagos, and on local leave in Kano. The second batch covers June or July 1937 - 5 January 1939 (77 pages), when he was chiefly in Ibadan and Zaria.

24 Mahdist and other religious revivals in Nigeria. A confidential, typescript memorandum concerning Tarikas (Islamic fraternities) in the Northern Provinces of Nigeria. The memo was issued to C.E.J. Whitting, and includes his pencil annotations on the last page. The full title is 'Mahdist and other religious revivals in the Northern Emirates of Nigeria: a précis and appreciation from recent correspondence on the subject by T. Hoskyn Abrahall, A.D.O.'.

A proof copy, 12 September 1892 (9 pages), with manuscript comments, of Percy Anderson's confidential memorandum on Uganda that led to the British decision to retain the country. 35 Diary of Sir John Ponsonby. An undated copy of Ponsonby's diary covering his departure from England on 8 January 1898, his journey from the East African coast to Uganda and military operations. Ponsonby stopped writing at the end of 1899 after he became ill. There is a page summarising the events of 1899 when he served under Col. Evatt in operations against Mwanga and Kabarega before returning to England later in the year. The diary is illustrated with numerous sketches. The collection includes photocopies of typescript and manuscript letters and orders of 1898 and 1899. There is also a copy of a letter of 25 November 1947 from Michael Moses to Col. Charles Ponsonby, a relation of Sir John, sending his good wishes.

46 Visitors' book of Alice Hobley. A photocopy of Alice Hobley's visitors' book from her time in East Africa, containing 38 pages of signatures and an inserted letter from Lord Kitchener to C.W. Hobley. Most of the signatures date from 1906-1919, but there are three from 1922-1923. There are accompanying manuscript and typescript notes made by A.T. Matson and T.H.R. Cashmore in 1987, regarding the identification of the names in the book (7 pages), and a manuscript letter to D.H. Simpson from Cashmore, 21 September 1987 (3 pages). There are also 14 typescript pages of notes compiled by D.H. Simpson with reference to Matson and Cashmore's work, May 1992, listing and where possible identifying the names of the signatories, accompanied by an extract from a book relating to Kitchener.

The diary (pp. 1-81) describes the establishment of the administration in Kavirondo, including the fighting that took place. It is followed by the names of Kavirondo tribes and chiefs (pp. 83-84), miscellaneous papers (p. 84) and Mumia's Station Case Book, 19 February 1895 - 31 January 1896, dealing chiefly with punishments (3 pages). There is an accompanying letter to Dr Anne Thurston from A.S. Bell of Rhodes House Library, 1 May 1985, regarding the presentation of the typescript to the R.C.S.

53 Decolonisation and multi-racialism in Tanganyika. A photocopy of notes compiled 21 June 1996 (24 pages), sent to Dr Deborah Fahy Bryceson of the African Studies Centre, Leiden, in response to her letter in the 'Bulletin of Tanzanian affairs', no. 54 (1996), asking 'anyone who lived in Tanganyika for any length of time during the years 1945-1961 to send me their recollections'. The notes cover race relations, 'African education and meritocracy', local government, T.A.N.U., and the role of civil servants in political change. There are seven further pages of material relating to Tanzania, including Dr Bryceson's letter.

65 Photograph of Cape Town Cathedral. A photograph of a watercolour depicting a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cape Town. The size of the copy, 14" x 9¾", is identical to the original painting, which was presented to the Society by Miss M. Pigot Moodie in 1939, and sold through C.J. Sawyer in December 1975. Pencilled at the bottom of the picture is 'Roman Catholic Cathedral' and 'Bowler 1888'. Frank R. Bradlow, a writer on Bowler, considered the painting to be an authentic Bowler, and that the date was a later addition.

94 Panorama of Freetown. Plastic sleeves containing an annotated print panorama of Freetown. Four of the prints are views from Mrs Terry's upstairs windows in the Church Missionary Grammar School house, formerly the resident of the Assistant Superintendents. The fifth is a view of the town and harbour from the promontory of King Tom's point. Each print measures 2' 2'' by 10''. There is an accompanying folder containing related correspondence between Christopher Fyfe of the Centre of African Studies, Edinburgh, and D.H. Simpson, R.C.S. Librarian, 13 May 1971 - 10 July 1971. The folder also contains reproductions of a circular advertising the sale of copies of the panorama, a letter to Mrs Terry from Henry Venn, Honorary Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, 7 June 1847, and a list of subscribers to the panorama.

101 Vecht Laager Natal 1838. A poster-size lithograph mounted in a plastic sleeve depicting an attack on the Vecht lager. The lager was comprised of 180 wagons travelling under the leadership of Karl Pieter Landman along Bosman's River during August 1838. The picture is signed 'H. Lea 1912' in the bottom left corner. There is also a printed description of the painting in Afrikaans describing the protagonists and a postcard with a reproduction of the picture. None of the items are dated.

103 The Mission premises at the Kuruman Station. An illustration 'printed in oil colours by G. Baxter' and published by J. Snow. The original work was produced in 1842, and was used as the frontispiece of Robert Moffat's 'Missionary labours and scenes in Southern Africa' (London, 1846). This is probably one of a series of prints of the picture that were sold to raise funds for the mission.
