F.R. Long joined the student staff of the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, in 1905. In 1908 he took up the position of Superintendent, Government Plantations, Perak and worked in the Agricultural Department of the Federated Malay States until 1920. Long later managed the Luna Rubber estates, Kedah.
