Content and context

Guy Hutchinson worked as an assistant upon Malayan rubber plantations.

A detailed account of Guy Hutchinson's two periods of employment as an assistant on Malayan rubber plantations. The memoirs include descriptions of the living and working conditions of the European assistants and work force, labour relations, and all aspects of the running of the estates. The file contains correspondence with Hugh Bryson, who has made minor factual amendments to the text.

RCS/RCMS 103/3/15 contains:
1 'Rubber planting in Malaya 1928-1932'. A narrative of Guy Hutchinson's experience working as an assistant on the Batu Caves rubber plantation. He lost his job during the depression of the rubber industry in the early 1930s (138 sheets).

2 'A happy return 1934-1938'. An account of Guy Hutchinson's second period of employment as an assistant, this time on the Tenang rubber estate (58 pages).
